C'est pendant mon travail de gribouillage sur le storyboard de la série Cardboard Box Head que j'ai découvert la dernière chanson Ghost Life de mon ami musicien Orco (un véritable king of electro pop zarbi je vous le dis !).
J'ai tout de suite été frappé par les connexions évidentes de son texte avec le message que je voulais délivrer dans ma série. De plus, l'ambiance musicale mélancolique et un brin angoissante collait parfaitement avec le rendu graphique que je voulais donner à mes photographies.
Lors des prises de vues, cette petite musique m'a accompagné sans relâche, comme si c'était la bande son de la vie de l'homme à la tête de carton.
Il était donc logique de rendre hommage à ce titre de Orco et de donner vie aux photographies grâce à cette incroyable bande son.

It was during my work on the storyboard of the Cardboard Box Head project that I discovered the song "Ghost Life", composed by my friend Orco (a real king of weird electro pop!)
I was immediately struck by obvious connections between the lyrics and the message I wanted to deliver within my photo project. Moreover, the melancholy mood of that song and those weird electronic sounds were matching the atmosphere I wanted to deliver with my photographs.
During shooting, this little music went round and round in my head, as the official life soundtrack of the Cardboard Box Head guy.
So at the end, it was logical to pay tribute to this song of Orco and to give life to my photographs through this incredible soundtrack.

A small bonus post to share the creative brief of the series Cardboard Box Head. I used that document to formalize my ideas to prepare my shootings and simplifying interactions with my assistants Olivier and Cali.
This document is reassuring in the fact that a guy who draws up like a 4 years child can catch up by making nice things in photography ...

L'homme à la boîte de tête en carton est de retour chez lui, box sweet box...
Je trouvais marrant et un brin surréaliste d'imaginer le personnage s'entourant de boîtes en carton pour aménager son espace de vie (c'est plus simple à monter que les meubles Ikéa).
La boucle du "métro, boulot, dodo" est en train de se refermer.

I found funny and a bit surreal picturing the character surrounding himself with cardboard boxes to organize its living space (it's easier to install than Ikea furniture).
The loop of the humdrum daily routine is ready to be closed.

Alors à court d'idées le Riri ?
Depuis le début du projet, j'avais en tête une des images de la série représentant l'homme à la tête de carton en quête de nourriture, en contemplation devant le rayon des boîtes de conserve dans un supermarché...
J'ai mis un certain temps avant de faire le lien avec cette première photographie datant de 2008...
Après plusieurs essais infructueux (satanés vigiles !) et une petite discussion sur le sujet avec Cali, il m'a alors semblé évident que je ne pouvais trouver meilleur spot pour cette photographie, alors pourquoi lutter pour finalement aboutir à une photographie moins graphique et décevante au regard de la série ?
J'ai donc travaillé sur cette photographie sans regarder une seule fois la photographie originale, et au final le rendu et l'atmosphère de ces deux images sont radicalement différents ; la photographie originale a été digérée par l'univers de la série Cardboard Box Head.

Since the project began, I had in mind a photograph representing the Cardboard Box Head guy in search of food, looking at shelving full of cans in a supermarket ...
After several unsuccessful attempts (damn security guards!) And a small discussion on the topic with Cali, it seemed obvious to me then that I could not find a better spot for this photograph, so why fight and eventually lead to a less graphic photograph and disappointing picture regarding the rest of the series?
So I worked on this photograph without looking once the original photograph, and at the end, the atmoshere of those two images is radically different, the original photograph was digested by the world of darkness of the Cardboard Box Head guy.

Working on the "job" part for the humdrum daily routine of the carboard box head guy, I looked again at photographer Phillip Toledano work with a focus on his project "Bankrupt", hoping it will inspire the shooting.
Then, as often with my first intentions, I've slipped into something else, abusing the tilt-shift effect in a minimalist corridor to remake 2001: A Space Odyssey in one shot :)

J'aime bien cette rupture de ton subite et cette ellipse narrative, comme si le spectateur avait détourné les yeux de la scène l'espace d'un instant, pour rater l'essentiel de l'action...

Et pour les deux du fond qui s'interrogent : oui la prise de vue a été Rock 'n' roll ! :)

A beautiful absurd image for this fourth photograph of the series Cardboard Box Head.
I like this abrupt change of tone and the narrative ellipsis, as if the viewer had looked away from the scene within few seconds, to miss most of the action ...

And oh yeah ! This shooting was Rock 'n' roll! :)
